For Zaharah, batik is not just a hobby; it’s a lifelong passion. Having worked as a textile lecturer in UiTM for over three decades, she has had the unique opportunity to constantly experiment with various materials and techniques with her students. And while she may have lost count of the sheer amount of students that she has taught, there is no denying that Zaharah has also learnt a great deal about the art.
During her time as a lecturer, Zaharah has been invited abroad on several occasions to present papers on the local art. More importantly, she was able to experiment with many materials and techniques like paper and wood, and even ventured into products like wall panels, interior design, and product designs.
“As you experiment and learn through trial end error, you realize the amazing things that you can achieve.” said Zaharah. “Once you master the techniques, understand the media and the tools, you will find that you can go a long way to innovate, and refine, and even create new techniques that would translate into beautiful masterpieces.”
