THE RECORD-MAKING COLONEL MEOW

64319_281851101957177_982801981_n

To be honest will you, I hate cats. So boo me! But I figured that many of you would enjoy looking at a cat that, apart from looking like an electrocuted cartoon character, made it to the Guiness Book of Records for having the world’s longest fur. And it’s name is Colonel Meow.

This cat is a complete freak. And that is why it’s here.

Just look at it. All idling and shit.

Of course, Colonel Meow also “operates” its very own social media accounts and website. Ironically, it can be quite a bitch online for a cat.

BEHIND THE BLACK GATE

lfuygbn

Hidden away in the backstreets of Deptford, South-East London, a historic gem sets the scene for our first AW13 webtorial shoot. At the end of a long cobbled road, behind a mysterious black gate and hidden from plain view, sits The Master Shipwrights House. Dark, mysterious, British and romantic, much like our AW13 collection — we couldn’t wait to take a look around.
Built in 1708 by Joseph Allin, the master shipwright for the Royal Dockyard next door, the house boasts three floors of historical splendour. A significant structure in England’s history and the location for Mario Testino’s famous photographs of Kate Moss, the stripped walls, antique rugs, spectacular floor to ceiling windows and quirky props are just a few of the features of the property.

Born in the British coastal town of Lyme Regis, we caught up with our model Alice Cornish to talk AW13, style and London life.
Name: Alice Cornish
I’m originally from…
A small coastal town in the South-West of England called Lyme Regis. It’s an amazing place to go back to visit, it even has it’s own retro 1940′s cinema. It is also home to Hix’s Oyster Bar, one of my favourite places to eat.

I’ve been modelling for…
3 years
I would describe my personal style as…
Casual and bohemian, a little bit scruffy. I love layering and my leather jacket is a staple. At the moment I love teaming feminine midi skirts with chunky boots — it’s surprisingly flattering.
My favourite piece from the Jigsaw AW13 collection is…
I love this green dress, it can be dressed up or down. It also looks great with my boots!

The best part of my job is…
The travelling, it can get stressful not knowing where each day will take you, but it is also very exciting. I do miss my bed most of the time.
If I wasn’t a model I would be…
A Chef, I just love cooking and experimenting with different flavours. I’m not too bad either!
My Favourite city is…
London in the sun, it’s beautiful. There is nowhere like it.
The best place to eat in London is…
A little Japanese place in Mornington Crescent called Asakusa. It serves up delicious authentic Japanese food, a true hidden gem.
At the weekend you’ll find me…
Searching for gems in the Camden Market vintage shops, I love finding original pieces.

#1: The Toss & Blend
Smoothies are such a popular choice because it is super easy to make, and it doubles up as a way to finish leftover fruits. Plus, you can always pack it in a disposable cup and slurp it on the go. Experiment with different combination of fruits, or you can opt to use fruit juice for a less pulpy feel.

2 Cups – Plain yoghurt
1 Cup – Your choice of sliced fruits (Berries, Mangos, Bananas, Apples, etc.)
1 Pinch of salt
Honey / Sugar to taste
The Method:Toss em’ all in and blend like a mad scientist.

#2: Popeye’s Scrambled Eggs
Eggs are a high-protein breakfast diet that is always easy to whip up. Try this healthy variation for a lasting meal that won’t leave you with the munchies mid-day.

The Ingredients/Tools:
1 Non-stick pan
1 Regular-sized egg
½ Tomato diced
A handful of spinach leaves
A sprinkle of dried oregano
1/8 Onions sliced
Salt & pepper to taste
Slice of butter
The Method:
Crack the egg into a bowl and beat in salt, pepper, and oregano till consistent. Add the diced tomatoes, onions, and spinach into the mix. Heat the non-stick pan over a medium fire for 2 minutes, melt the butter and pour in the eggs. You can choose to scramble them to your desired consistency, or leave it to cook into an omelette. Place a slice of cheese to melt on top if you’re feeling particularly indulgent. Done!

#3:  Avocado Wrap
The rich and creamy texture of avocados comes from a high content of monounsaturated fat, which lowers your bad LDL cholesterol and boosts the good HDL cholesterol. Not particularly a popular Asian ingredient, they are still relatively cheap to obtain, and are a great (and easy) addition to sandwiches and salads.

#4: French Toast
You don’t have to be fussy to enjoy this easy French delight. Simple and scrumptious, this is another sustainable meal that should last you till lunch.

Melt the butter in the pan and cook on each side until golden brown.  Serve with maple syrup, or spread a thin layer of butter if you want to pack it, to keep it moist.

#5:  Salmon Sandwich
Smoked salmon is another healthy ingredient to work with, containing yummy Omega-3 fatty acids which also lower your bad cholesterol and raise the good ones, improve memory, while lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease . You can easily get them in the chilled section of most supermarkets, and is delicious even on its own!

THE SPAWNING OF MINIATURE BRAINS HAS BEGUN

brain_sq-d39603206920445b611550e28e9325e33468569f-s6-c30

Ah, science and medicine, you never fail to freak us out. Recent weeks have seen us inching closer to flawless bionic body parts and replicating organs– with the latest being the brain itself. Thanks to researchers in Austria who specialise in stem cell manipulation, it is now possible to create humunculi… I mean tiny human brains. Literally ‘pea brains’ at 4mm wide, and more correctly referred to as ‘cerebral organoids’.

CEREBRAL WHAT? OH NO YOU DIDN’T!

Much to our dismay, t
he team does not have plans to produce fully grown brains, and as such don’t forsee any issues where ethics are concerned. So if they’re not growing us some serious gray matter, what’s all this then you ask? According to the team, the ability to produce pint size brains could come in handy in the study of brain diseases and conditions – stuff down the lines of schizophrenia, and rare brain conditions such as microcephaly.
According to Dean Burnett, a Cardiff University psychiatry lecturer: “The human brain is the most complex thing in the known universe and has a frighteningly elaborate number of connections and interactions, both between its numerous subdivisions and the body in general. Saying that you can replicate the workings of the brain with some tissue in a dish in the lab is like inventing the first abacus and saying you can use it to run the latest version of Microsoft Windows – there is a connection there, but we’re a long way from that sort of application yet.”
That said, it’s not likely that an army of synthetic superhuman hybrids will take over the world soon. Then again, if history is any guide, mankind never turns down a chance to play God in some clandestine lab or other.

LIMBLESS BUT LIMITLESS: MEETING NICK VUJICIC UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Life-Without-Limbs

“Skydiving was so scary, my knees were shaking. Get it?” he said, and the crowd immediately broke into laughter. Nick Vujicic may have no limbs, but he definitely has a sense of humour. Having heard a lot about this motivational speaker and his talks that have reached 1.3 billion people so far, I immediately transformed into a sponge, geared up to absorb some of his inspiration.
photo (1)An enthusiastic 800 attendees turned up at the Up Close & Personal event held at Hilton, PJ.
In case you’ve been living on another planet, Nick Vujicic is a Serbian-Australian who was born with an extremely rare condition called tetra-melia syndrome, which in layman’s terms means being born without arms or legs. His sensational story has spread like wildfire across the globe as he’s accomplished a great deal more than even average-limbed humans. Swimming, horse-riding, writing, are just some of the daily activities he has amazingly mastered, apart from encouraging folks from all walks of life to be better human beings with the strength and help from God. He runs his own non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs, and has published four books so far detailing his life obstacles, daring others to live theirs full of faith and positivity. (Read more about the event here)

Opening with his story of depression, loneliness, and near suicide at the age of 10, Vujicic mentioned how he was deeply unhappy about his handicapped condition, constantly questioning why he was chosen for these burdens. A couple of epiphanies later, which included spraining his version of a foot which ironically caused him to feel handicapped and grateful for whatever he had, Vujicic found his passion to be a speaker, and slowly started his journey to success. He then proceeded to a topic that most people, Asians in particular, could relate to: pressure to perform. Society places a harsh judgement of a person based on what you do for a living, how much you earn, how many friends you have; it’s easy to get caught up in the rat race and not feel fulfilled by one’s life accomplishments. Mediocrity shouldn’t be persecuted – jerks and bullies should. A great opening indeed.
As the talk intensified, Vujicic touched on several more topics such as generosity, strength of personality, and mainly fighting against bullying. “Bullies tear down but friends build up”, he said while addressing the group of underprivileged children seated on the floor space in front of him. Mentioning that he would go the extra mile just to make the difference in one person’s life, he then proceeded to mention that out of 600 schools that he has travelled delivering his anti-bullying talks, only one school actually heeded his message and ended bullying. Encouraging much?
IMG_6528
Ignore the headshots. I tried my best!
Fair enough, his intentions were the best in nature, though looking at the crowd which held mostly working adults, I felt he could have addressed more on the disguised manners of bullying in adulthood. The impish ring associated with the word “bullying” can make it seem like it should solely be a child’s problem. The fact is, as long as the tiniest form of hierarchical system exists, bullying will be here to stay in all sorts of ways. Perhaps a more realistic and less idealistic angle of bullying would have done everyone some good?
By the end of it all, I have to admit I was a tiny bit disappointed. It felt like the evening was just about to kick off into something more meaningful before it came to an abrupt end. Maybe it was the time restraint, maybe it was those almost boastful self-statistics that he subtly threw in. Or wait – maybe it was the fact that he kept proclaiming his genuine love and brotherhood for everyone in the world, regardless of age, nationality or background, the typical religious play. Personally, I feel that the concept is utopian: if love is a default emotion, then there’s nothing really special about it anymore, no?
Then again, maybe I’m just too sceptical for my own good.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU RING AND CLOCK

03

An award winning time piece by Gusztav Szikszai, here’s a ring that gives you time on your hands; well, your finger to be exact. When the pictures of the Ring Clock was posted online, it caught the attention of many people in various forums asking how they could get hold of one. Since then, the team behind this creation have been fine tuning the design and technology so that they can deliver the best quality product and building the right team to bring this to market.
20130816041241-01__1_
The main features of the Ring Clock include a simple and clean design and a unique clock aspect around the ring’s band. Besides, it’s eco-friendly and playful (time is displayed when you rotate the ring) and is fitted with cutting edge technology (wireless charge, ultra-thin battery, energy-saving LEDs).
20130816040146-4mon
“It started with a challenge 2 years ago at CGSociety.Org named Moving Innovation. The idea was to create visualisation for a product that cannot exist today, but could exist 10 years from now. I wanted to create something that is innovative, good to look at and can actually be useful. I never wore a watch on my wrist because I don’t like the feeling, but I like watches in general, so I used that opportunity to let my mind come up with something that I could wear, the Ring Clock,” said Gustav.

HERMÉS UNVEILS $12,900 BASKETBALL

hermes-basketball-0

Luxuy French brand Hermés recently launched a blue ball. No, no that kind of a blue ball but a blue basketball using calfskin and the same hand-stitching technique found in its iconic Birkin bag. And while the Birkin bag is priced at $65,000, you’ll most likely need an NBA players salary to get your hands on this sporty piece de resistance. What’s the cost like? Well, it’s going for $12,900. Hey, that sure seems like a reasonable price for a basketball. And totally worth it huh? Um, you know, for reasons.
hermes-basketball-635
There’s only two such basketballs that has been produced at the special-orders atelier in Paris under the creative direction of Pierre-Alexis Dumas. Being such a unique masterpiece, thieves should have no problem identifying the filthy rich douchebag who would be obnoxious enough to bring this out to play.
