Aside from the new Tab, Note and fruit-phones released in recent weeks, it would appear that Samsung’s new Galaxy Gear Smartwatch is getting the most attention – being the first from a reputable brand to be available to the masses, coming after the I’m Smart Android Smartwatch released earlier this year, which you couldn’t have missed considering they at one point had a banner at the bottom of many popular websites.
In a nutshell, the Galaxy Gear is android powered – and you need to synchronise it with your phone (via bluetooth) to receive calls and messages from it instead. Ideally, this will save you the trouble of fumbling around for your phone in ‘tight’ situations and those occasions where you carelessly leave it lying around. Other than that, the Gear other primary functions include music player functionality and the ability to track your exercise – making it a great accessory for those who lead an active lifestyle.
Weighing just 73.8g, this Smartwatch packs an 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM – while images are displayed on a 320×320 super AMOLED screen – and while this processor speed may appear ‘sluggish’ compared to other Samsung offerings, it compensates for that with a less demanding overall layout, leaving all the heavier functions to your Smartphone.
It comes with a 1.9-megapixel camera, located on the strap (reminiscent of those digital watches which used to have a small compass in that position). Functions on the camera are limited however, as it is designed for low-resolution snaps and short videos. You can choose between several different image sizes, with options of auto or macro focus, while you can record 10 second videos at a maximum resolution of 720p.
On the downside, charging the Gear requires it to be connected to a dock, and while a Micro-USB socket is available on the this, there is not one on the watch itself… how odd. Nonetheless, unless you plan to completely replace your phone with it on-the-go, there’s not much of a chance it will die on you. Also, a limited amount of apps are currently available, but Samsung has plans in motion to launch more in addition to the existing 70 apps in coming months, which will be optimised for the small screen, and processing power of the Gear.
