Make-up wizards, hair whisperers, and nail designers have one thing in common: all of them can be too professional at times. While they can be counted on to hand out their maestro advice and enlighten you with their dexterity and wisdom, they might forget what it’s like to see things from a consumer’s point of view. Nevertheless, here we present you some tricks that may have sneakily escaped the limelight.
#1: FIGHT OILY SKIN WITH OIL-BASED PRODUCTS

This may sound unorthodox, but it works. You know you’re a victim of oily skin when you have a stash of blotting paper with you wherever you go. It’s no fun at all worrying whether your skin looks like a frying pan every 20 minutes. Beauty outlets have a vast range of products that may cater to oily skin, from face washes, to toners, and even make up that discourages the production of oil. What is rarely understood is that using too much of these products may strip your skin of its natural oils, which signals the skin to start producing more oils for moisture. Instead, try fitting in a moisturizer that contains nutrient oils that boost essential fatty acids in the skin. This will lock in the skin’s natural dew, keeping those nasty oil-producing sebum glands from working too hard.
#2: THE PURSUIT OF CHAPPINESS – NOT!

Scaling lips can be huge turn off, especially if you draw attention to it with a daringly bright layer of lipstick. If you’re a flaky lipper, prevent this easily by wetting your lips every morning and using a toothbrush to gently exfoliate the surface of your lips. Be wary of the pressure you use when doing this as lips are one of the more delicate areas of the face (which is what makes them so kissable in the first place!). Once you’ve done that, wipe those babies dry and apply a thin layer of rich moisturizing lip balm before dolling them up with your choice of stain.
#3: LEAVE YOUR CURLS BE

The inheritance of wavy and curly hair is often debatable as a blessing or curse. Personally, I long for big natural kinks that don’t require regular chemical feeding to last. But when I vocalize this desire, more often than not the rants start piling on about how tough curls are to maintain. Here’s a tip that might help: don’t bother combing or brushing out your hair if it is curly or wavy. Brushing it takes away its natural shape. You may even discover a whole new hairdo by simply leaving your hair to be – what you may have thought were dull waves, may actually be lusciously defined Shirley Temple ringlets awaiting their glorious moment to shine. Every morning when you get up, simply apply a little mild hair mouse or moisturizer, finger brush your hair, and you’re good to go.
#4: REMOVE NAIL POLISH WITH, UM…NAIL POLISH

Those who frequently experiment with lacquers at home might have already figured this out. If you’re running low on nail polish remover and you just must clean those fingernails of their old, chipped-off nail polish, fret not. Apply a coat of clear nail polish onto the nail and quickly use a cotton ball to wipe it off. If your existing nail colour is thick, let the clear nail polish soak in for a while before wiping it off. To prevent it from drying out too fast, keep going over the clear polish with the applicator until you are ready to wipe it off.
#5: CLEAN OUT YOUR BEAUTY TOOLS

This may be common knowledge, but it is still surprising how many people choose to ignore it. I mean, would you wipe your face on a floor that hasn’t been swept for over a month? We don’t mean to nag, but the skin on your face is a very sensitive area, especially if you’re prone to acne, and cosmetic tools make the perfect breeding hideout for stealthy germs. Make sure you shoo them out by cleaning your make up brushes and sponges at least once a week. All you’ll need is some shampoo (preferably baby shampoo for its mild nature) and water. Lather the bristles of your brushes – only the bristles, avoid wetting the metal tip – and run them under water till it runs clean. Do the same for your sponges and leave them to dry. Voila! Bacteria-free brushes in under 10 minutes.
