THE SCANNER MOUSE

THE SCANNER MOUSE
WORKS AS ADVERTISED
I was very skeptical when I first watched the 3D rendered demo of how the LSM 100 works. It looked too good to be true, probably because I am jaded by the steaming heap of bloated manure that is mainstream smartphone marketing. But I was wrong.
After watching a live demonstration of how it really works, I was convinced that the LG Scanner Mouse LSM 100 is a dream come true that made us go “It’s about time someone invented that.” Its real-world ability painlessly scan pictures, documents, identify text and transfer them straight to your computer is as impressive as advertised.
Employing a CMOS chip to capture a video of the scanner’s motion on the page, the Scanner Mouse instantly and seamlessly processes and aligns the video images with each other with the help of a guiding laser to create a still image. So even if you overlap an area that has already been scanned, or go in an odd motion, it will still be able to create a perfectly aligned image. The coolest part about this process is seeing a black screen being ‘wiped’ off to reveal your scanned image as you swipe the Scanner Mouse. Then there is the fluffy feature that enables you to upload your scanned image directly onto social media platforms.

For text processing, the Scanner Mouse features integrated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that not only enables you to directly copy the text off a scanned document, but to also identify individual text cells on a scanned table which can then be pasted into an Excel sheet. On top of that, the OCR can also process over a hundred languages, but unless you write perfect replicas of digital fonts, it can barely identify handwritten text at all.

While the Scanner Mouse is undeniably fun to use and can scan images with acceptable accuracy for the casual user, it still does not match up to that of the bigger dedicated scanners in terms of image quality. And at over $90 USD, its price tag is probably something to ponder on, considering the fact that you could get a dedicated scanner for less. Come to think about it, I wouldn’t be surprised if there already are smartphone apps in the market that can provide cheaper alternatives to this expensive solution. Still, like all niche products, there will be a market for this noteworthy innovation.
