P&G CELEBRATES 175 YEARS OF INNOVATION GLOBALLY

MB_Photo2

Famous painter Vincent Van Gogh once said “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together” and nothing rings more true than the effect that we can positively make for our own self and our loved ones, everyday, through some good choices and mindful considerations.
To inspire Malaysians in embracing the little acts that make our lives easier or even more special every day, Procter & Gamble Malaysia (P&G), the company behind some of our best-loved consumer brands joined its global counterparts in celebrating P&G’s 175 years of innovation – The Everyday Effect story.
MB_H6
Fresher starts, smoother mornings or brighter workdays, it all begins with our everyday acts. While brushing teeth, shaving, doing laundry or washing dirty plates may not seem like extraordinary acts, the culmination of these actions is significant, making life better for billions of people across the world. That’s why P&G coined The Everyday Effect story.
“Sometimes we forget to appreciate the value the simple acts that we do every day bring to the quality of our lives. Imagine a day when you can’t be bothered to brush your teeth, shave, clean your oily hair, wash the smelly clothes or clear the mess in the house – I would say we just can’t do without. At P&G, awareness of the significance of these simple acts is the biggest motivation that drives innovation of our products.” Nicolas de La Giroday, Country CEO for P&G Malaysia and Singapore shared the great thought behind the celebration event at Elements Showroom at Jalan Ampang.
Every year, P&G brands and innovation has changed the way 4.6 billion people around the world live. In Malaysia, its portfolio of superior performing brands include Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essence, Rejoice, Olay, Gillette, Oral-B, Dynamo, Fab, Downy, Febreze, Ambi-Pur, Joy, Duracell, Pampers, Vicks, Vidal Sassoon and SKII.

“To us, innovation is about finding a way to make every day better. Whether it’s providing the kids with great play time in a clean home or getting college students ready for life away from home, or simply getting that boost of confidence because of a clean shave, beautiful skin or a beautiful white smile, it has inspired P&G to create products that make meaningful differences in everyday life. The celebration of The Everyday Effect story is to remind more families to appreciate those ordinary moments and how big impact they really have on our lives,” he added.
Sharing the same sentiment at the event was all-round celebrity mum Daphne Iking. She chronicled the daily woes faced by ordinary Malaysians and the true meaning of everyday acts to her, “Dry and damaged hair, odours on clothes, spill on sofas or even bad traffics are probably some of the many common everyday problems you and I encounter. At time like this, nothing makes as big an impact as products that make everyday routine and tasks that little bit easier, faster and effortless. Small gestures of kindness and saving time on everyday chores really do mean a lot for working mum like me.”
MB_Photo3
She added, “I’m surprised to know that my family appreciates those little details I have looked into building a comfortable home. When your kids ran to you to tell how much they love that smell on their blanket, how much they look forward to brushing teeth together in the morning, you know in their heart, you are their supermom. It’s the little actions that count.”
A “P&G Hunt” was hosted for the media to discover the innovations P&G have brought into our homes. Media were given a series of clues regarding P&G products and using these clues they were asked to locate the product at its corner and answer some questions within a certain amount of time out.

4 CAR MAINTENANCE MYTHS THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW

Fitness-Myths

It’s not always good to believe what you hear, even though a friend of a friend of a friend of yours swears it is true. When it comes to car maintenance and fuel efficiency, all sorts of information is flying this way and that. What’s fact and what’s fiction? Here we have found and busted some common car care myths for your benefit.

Change your oil every 5,000 km
oil-changeMyth! Some car workshops might do a convincing talk of asking you to change your engine oil once every 5000 km. This is unnecessary. In reality, you could go up to twice that distance, depending on the mileage of your car. A reliable source of reference would be to follow your car manual or servicing logbook that comes with it. If you’ve managed to misplace that, then call up your car dealer that you regularly deal with.  (Via blog.meezer.com)

Air Conditioning uses much fuel
airconditioningrepairMyth! Many (including myself once upon a time) are convinced that air conditioning actually takes up more fuel than winding your windows down for fresh air. Tests show that the difference in fuel consumption is negligible, plus, depending on the make of your car, driving with your windows down might actually consume more fuel due to the increased drag of the car. So if you’re running low on fuel, don’t bother switching off the AC. (Via sunautomotive.com)

Inflate tyres according to the sidewall indicator
tyre-sidewall-smallMyth! Tyres come with an embossed set of specifications printed on the sidewall (on the tyre itself). The indicator on the sidewall does not take into account the type of car, and sometimes does will not match the ideal tyre pressure needed by your vehicle. Again, follow your car manual specifications, or the readings on the sticker indicator which can be usually located on the doorjamb. (Via kwik-fit.com)

Premium RON 97 fuel is better for your car
ron95-n-ron97Myth! Unless your car’s fuel injection is specifically made to run on premium fuel, using RON 97 instead of RON 95 is not going to make a lot of difference on your car – but it will on your pocket. Most cars are made to process the regular RON 95 petrol. So check your car specs before choosing to burn more money on the RON 97. (Image via zerotohundred.com)

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOUR MODELLING CAREER IS ALMOST OVER?

article-0-18E230B900000578-148_634x430

Chop off your locks and model for the opposite gender. At least that’s what Elliott Sailors, a professional model who became iconic for her Bacardi billboard ads, did when her career options started drastically decreasing when she hit the age of 31. While hitting the thirties may mark the start of career success for some of the rest of us, in the world of modelling, youth always prevails as the preference of agencies. (image above via dailymail.co.uk)

Unless, of course, you’re a man. Male models, not being too restricted on the age factor, still have strong prospects at that age, hence Sailors’ switch from female bikini bombshell to androgynous pretty-boy. Chopping of her long blonde locks and emphasizing her already existent (and sometimes criticized about) angular masculine features with the help of a little makeup and a trendy haircut at the barbers.

Odd as her story is, Sailors’ isn’t the first one to take this route, with a few other models already paving the way for her epic move, such as Casey Legler, 35, the first woman to get into androgynous modelling as a male.
Having shed a few tears during her bold head-shearing session, we must say, Sailors’ embracing of her new hipster look totally trumps any memory of Britney’s diva-ish move. Besides, at least Sailors’ had a sane reason for doing it.
And yes, she was, and still is happily married.

BE FUEL EFFICIENT WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS

boat-engine-4-stroke-in-board-petrol-engine-300-400-hp-22159-3575121

Petrol, fuel, gasoline, juice – whatever you call it, it’s just another man-made dependency that we can’t live without now.  If you’re lucky enough to live in Malaysia, you would have experienced that nasty 10% hike in fuel prices of late, and if you’re like me, are probably living in twitching fear of the next price hike.
So now that we’ve established what we can’t control, let’s focus on what we can. Practice these few fuel saving tips to max out the life of your full tank.

Start up and drive off
stock-footage-man-in-car-inserting-ignition-key-starting-engine-and-switches-the-transmission-to-automaticOnce you’ve started up your car, don’t idle it out while being stationary. The practice of ‘warming up the car’ is a myth, and in fact, a car warms up faster when you’re driving it than idling it. Leaving a car to idle just wastes petrol, increases the emission of unwanted fumes and is bad for those breathing in the fumes. So start your car only when you’re prepared to move off to save your fuel.(Pic via shutterstock.com)

Take it easy on the breaks
r387082_1807298Jamming your brakes on and off during your journey is a real fuel killer. Drive at moderate speeds, or at least keep a large distance from the car ahead of you so that if it slows down, or if a car cuts into your lane, you won’t need to go down on your brakes hard. Constant speeds and infrequent braking increases your fuel efficiency of up to 30%. So yeah, unless you’re Batman there’s really no need to drive like a maniac. (Pic via abc.net.au)

Shut it down
If you’re pulling up and waiting for a friend to hop in, turn off your engine if you think you’re going to be longer than 5 minutes. Your fuel is meant for the car to move, so it’s kind of pointless if you’re running it when you’re going nada in distance. And yes, I’m sure you can survive 10 minutes without your air-conditioning running. First world problems, I say.
funny-selfie-demi-lovatoPlus, you could do this while waiting.
(Pic via smosh.com)
Leave it running
dog-in-carI promise, I’m not trying to confuse you here. Yes, leaving your engine on for a long time is pointless and wasteful, but so is turning it on and off too often. In case you didn’t know, it also costs petrol to start up your car. If you’re only going to be a while, say 2-3 minutes, don’t bother shutting down your engine, as it would end up only being more expensive than leaving it running. (Pic via recombu.com)

Pump it
AMT-(3)The foundation of your car, a.k.a. the four things that we call ‘wheels’, also play a big role when it comes to fuel consumption. Under inflated tires would decrease the pick-up of your vehicle, meaning that more fuel will have to be used in order to get your car accelerating. So make sure your tyres are pumped to their optimal pressure (refer to your car manual or the specs on the tyre), and you’ll not only heighten your fuel efficiency, but prolong the life of your tyres too. (Pic via motortrader.com.my)

ROADTRIP WITH THESE 7 AWESOME SMARTPHONE APPS

smartphone

When you spend five hours driving out of the city to embark on a countryside adventure, you’d want to get the most out of your trip. Whether it’s knowing the cool spots that only the locals would know, or whether you need some help in planning out this exciting weekend of yours, just bring along your smartphone with these (mostly free) apps installed in it, and you’re set for the time of your life! (Image via boutiquelondonlets.com)

If you haven’t heard of this navigation app by now, you’ve been missing out big time. Waze won’t only come in handy during your exploration of this new town you’re heading too, but comes in useful during regular city driving as well. The app integrates data that is sent in by users, thus keeping it updated on an almost real-time basis, and the best part is, it warns you of impending cop stops and navigates you around nasty jams to keep your road rage level at a minimum.

apps-01 - Copy (3)
Wherever you end up going, World Explorer lets you look up the nearby hotspots that you might want to pop by for a visit. You can use the rating, distance, and alphabetical filtering options available to help you choose the location that you’d like to visit, whether you favour more cultural attractions like museums and must-see architecture, or are the avid shopaholic who goes for malls, malls, and more malls.
Tip: You can also use the localized MyTravel Malaysia if you’re going to be travelling within the country only.

apps-01
As the name suggests, this app uses your current location settings, and finds hotels and lodgings around you, leaving you free to modify your plans and route as you’d like. Through this app you can filter the hotels and lodgings by star rating, price, and distance from you, and even make a booking should you come across something that you like.

apps-01 - Copy (5)
If you’re actually doing the whole countryside camping thing, you’d definitely appreciate this download. SkyMap maps out the visible (and some not-so-visible) stars, planets and satellites in the sky out to precision, using the location setting information on your phone. Just launch the app and aim it to the heavens to figure out what that bright star actually is. Even if you’re in the city or the skies are filled with annoying clouds, this app is still pretty cool to scan the skies with.

apps-01 - Copy (2)
When you have a fully-packed itinerary ahead of you, keeping track of all the booking references, expenses, dates, and times can become overwhelming. Tripit solves that problem pretty well. Once you’ve made (and paid) for a booking, whether it’s a hotel lodging, museum entry, or to an opera show, just forward your booking confirmation email to plans@tripit.com, and it will categorize it into your smartphone app, laying out your itinerary for your holiday. QED.

Everyone knows the global conspiracy of how time suddenly passes so damn fast when you’re out holidaying. Cherish the moments you have, snap some quality photos, and log them into this Mobility Trip to make a digital photobook that you can then share online with friends and family or simply reminisce with. You can even insert your own quirky and silly captions to add a more personal touch to your project!

apps-01 - Copy (4)
This may seem a little out of the topic, but it really is not. Having a crazy long journey ahead of you would probably mean that you’d have to spend an hour organizing all the music you can take with you on your trip, right? Wrong! With Spotify, you can stream and endless list of music from your mobile phone, and discover some new tracks and artists while you’re at it! The down side is that you’d have to pay RM14.90 (USD 4.99) per month for the service to be available on your mobile device, however as the app gives you unlimited access to music, and allows you to save tracks for listening offline, it’s a pretty good deal to go with. If you rather take the cheapskate way out of things, though, then you’ll be glad to know that as the first month comes as a free trial, you always have the option of terminating your subscription after your (less-than-a-month) holiday.
