A predecessor to the giant rubber ducky that roamed the waters of Osaka, Sydney, and Hong Kong, the giant Sunbathing Hare is the latest installation to Dutch artist’s Florentijn Hofman that lays splayed, and basking happily under the Russian sun on Hare Island in St Petersburg.
Attracting countless tourists to the location for a photo opportunity, the Sunbathing Hare measures 15-metres long, 8-metres wide, and 2.5-metres tall and is part of a bilateral cultural programme between Russia and Netherlands.
When snapped from a bird’s eye view, the Sunbathing Hare sculpture portrays the effect of having a shaggy body, which was achieved by laying strips and strips of plywood over the sculpture, and painting them pink, orange, grey, and green to achieve the desired texture.
The sculpture will be up until the 13th of October, of which I am a little curious to how the grand dismantling will be carried out. It’s not like it can be deflated like the giant Rubber Duck, can it?
