Growing up in Singapore, I used to think that it had the best food around until I came to Kuala Lumpur and tried the street hawker food here. Boy was I wrong about a great many things!

One of the very first places I happened upon was near my apartment, located in KL’s very own food haven, Tengkat Tongshin. While it’s very the famous (and extremely touristy) Jalan Alor and Bukit Bintang area, this little Wanton Noodle stall sees a steady crowd of most local pubcrawlers night after night. Tourists mostly stick to the more famous Jalan Alor eateries and only the very knowledgeable locals who live and work around here would know about this place.
What’s so great about this little stall? I tried it out and guess what? This expat has been a regular customer ever since. Most patrons eat it dry and that’s ok ‘cause the noodles soaked in their signature thick, sweet soya sauce tasted great, especially when accompanied by deep fried pieces of lard (to make it more fragrant) and roasted sliced pork that literally melts in your mouth.
The soup tasted sweet and must have had a lot of Ikan Bilis (the local version of anchovies) stewing in it for a long time to give it that much character. As an added bonus, the Wanton dumplings in the soup were all hand-made and stuffed with minced pork and prawn paste before cooking, making the soup taste even sweeter.
Interested in giving it a try? Head on down to Tengkat Tongshin, this noodle shop is located opposite the Alpha Genesis Hotel and is open only after 10pm so it’s a great place to have supper after some heavy drinking at the bars along Changkat Bukit Bintang.
