A 2,000$ ticket get launched into space and orbit the planet is dirt cheap, it’s just too bad that you’d have to be dead and turned into ash to board this flight. Still, unless you’ve been a nasty degenerate all your life and nobody loves you, then a space burial that ends like a shooting star could actually be a pretty breathtaking way for your loved ones to send you off.
Elysium Space, a private-held corporation founded in 2013 by NASA veteran Thomas Civeit, is offering space burials which they refer to as ‘awe-inspiring celestial services’. Basically, Elysium Space will launch a symbolic portion of the departed’s ashes into space in a specially designed memorial spacecraft. According to Elysium Space, the spacecraft will ‘respectfully and peacefully’ orbit the Earth for a few months before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere in a ‘harmless’ and environmentally-minded manner – burning brightly like a shooting star as. Now, I can’t say for sure what ‘respectfully, peacefully, and harmlessly’ exactly, but considering the scale of such novelty, I’m all for it!
