Most wine connoisseurs take pride in telling tales about all the different wines they’ve tasted, from all around the world. But beyond the good ol’ fruits of the vine, an enterprising Filipino winemaker now hopes to put coconut-based wines on the world market as well, under the brand Vino de Coco. Touted as a ‘true wine drinkers drink’ with a smooth and tannic character, it promising more aroma, flavour and complexity’ than the common tuba beverage found throughout the Philippines.
To be precise, the wine is not made from coconut water. It comes from the fresh sap of coconut tree flowers – and the alcoholic nectar produced goes by many names around the world, and is often sold as a form of moonshine.
Regardless, the offerings by Vino de Coco are presented well, and three types are available – Dry Red Coconut Wine which promises less sweetness and to complement any meal Sweet Red Coconut Wine which would make for a great ‘alternative’ dessert wine; and Sweet White Coconut Wine which is light and sweet enough to be enjoyed anytime of the day.
