Desktop scanners have been in existence for quite a while, and now, 3D scanning has been made available to the masses – which seems totally logical, since 3D printing is all the hype now. That said, the practical uses of a 3D scanner are pretty much endless when coupled with 3D printing technology, as you’ll be able to scan and replicate just about any object that will fit into the printer. The said technology comes in the form of the Maker Bot Digitizer (US$1,400) – a device compact enough for desktop use and an indispensable tool to designers in various fields – from your bedroom illustrator enthusiast to architects.

Eat laser, gnome.
If you were wondering how small it is and how it works, the Makerbot Digitizer is 8 x 8 inches and weighs 3 kg, it’s mechanics are pretty straight forward – rotating the object of your choice on a turn table platform, as lasers scan all surfaces.

Makerbot also offers a nifty 3D Printer to go with it too!
To the uninitiated, 3D scanning has long been in use to scan real-life objects for use in games and movies, and a common technique involves the scanning of clay figures for images that will later be manipulated by animators. However, back in the day, these devices were pretty darn bulky, and required some serious technical know-how to operate. Nonetheless, as with all things complex, mankind would have it mass produced and simplified for the layman, and that’s not a bad thing… is it?

We don’t condone use on hamsters.
