Truly immortal, Bruce Lee has become part of our culture – symbolizing fighting finesse, honour and intellect. We’ve seen countless wannabes and imitators in Hollywood and Chinese blockbusters, however, everyone admits, there will only be one Bruce Lee. Hell, he’s the one guy you can never include in a Chuck Norris joke.
This year marks the Lee’s 40th death anniversary, and by the looks of it, Bruce Lee fever is back and spreading fast! From TV specials to documentaries to the now famous Johnnie Walker advertisement which ‘resurrected’ the renowned martial artist – and they did a pretty damn good job of it too, recreating him right down to the T.
Sure, the tribute sparked some controversy among die-hard fans, but hey, it was done with the blessing of Bruce Lee’s very own daughter, and definitely holds a powerful message that legends such as Bruce Lee are truly immortal.
To the uninitiated (and shame on you if you are), Lee is hailed as the silver-screen’s very first martial arts hero, and died to young in 1973 at the age of 32 – with the widely known cause of death being an allergic reaction to a painkiller. However, to this day, much controversy surrounds his death – ranging from popular consipracy theories involving triads, the ‘Touch of Death’, and a curse upon his family… which many say led to his son’s unfortunate death during the filming of a movie.
That aside however, Lee definitely pulled an ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’; for in death, he became more powerful than any of us would have imagined, as his legacy and philosophy will live on forevermore in the hearts of fans both old and new. Let the movie marathons begin!
